Topic: 2014-2015 Activities and Action Plan for 2016-2018
In frame of activities of the working group 8.1 Cast Composites the following international
conferences have been organized:
1. Metal-Matrix Composites - as Int. Symposium B3.2 of the European Congress on
Advanced Materials and Processes (EUROMAT 2015), 20-24.2015, Warsaw, POLAND
Chairs: Jerzy Sobczak (Foundry Research Institute, Poland); Rajiv Asthana (Univ. Wisconsin
Stout, USA)
The Symposium provided a forum for the exchange of knowledge, experience and ideas on the
latest developments and trends in the field of metal-matrix composites. The main topics covered
all relevant aspects of the science, technology, economics and applications of metal matrix
composites, including (but not limited to) the overall themes of processing, property
characterization, modelling, interface design, and recycling.
There were 58 presentations from 14 countries.
The papers submitted to the symposium will be published in 2016 in a special issue of the
Journal of Materials Engineering and Performance (Springer) upon acceptance following full
peer review.
2. Wetting and High-Temperature Capillarity - as Int. Symposium C2.3 of the European
Congress on Advanced Materials and Processes (EUROMAT 2015), 20-24.2015, Warsaw,
POLAND
Chairs: Natalia Sobczak (Foundry Research Institute, Poland); Boris Straumal (Russian
Academy of Sciences, Russia )
The Symposium aimed to provide a forum for academia, industry and government laboratories to
exchange knowledge, experience and latest developments in scientific, methodological and
practical aspects of thermophysical properties of molten metals and alloys and particularly,
wetting, adhesion, capillarity and accompanying phenomena. Special attention was paid to the
following topics: Measurement Techniques, Modelling and Simulation, Experimental
Characterization, Liquid-assisted Processing, Applications.
There were 45 presentations from 8 countries.
The papers submitted to the symposium will be published in 2016 in a special issue of the
Journal of Materials Engineering and Performance (Springer) upon acceptance following full
peer review.

Action plan for 2016-2018
1. Organization of 11th International Workshop on Subsecond Thermophysics, June 21-24,
2016, Krakow Poland
Chair: Natalia Sobczak (Foundry Research Institute, Poland)
As previous well-established workshops, the 11th International Workshop on Subsecond
Thermophysics will be focused on experimental, theoretical, simulation, and applied aspects of
thermophysical behavior of matter in the millisecond to picosecond time regimes. Among others,
it will include: rapid resistive or inductive heating and melting, pulsed laser heating and melting,
levitation of molten metals and alloys, rapid solidification. The emphasis will be on the
developments of experimental techniques to measure the materials thermophysical properties at
high temperatures. The Workshop will provide a forum for the exchange of knowledge,
experience and ideas on the latest developments as well as to promote cooperation between
academia, research institutions and industry.
The workshop will consist of invited and contributed papers. Full-length manuscripts, submitted
by the end of the workshop, will be reviewed and those accepted will appear in a special issue of
the journal High Temperatures-High Pressures published by Old City Publishing, Inc. (USA).
2. Publication of the book “WETTABILITY AND INTERFACES IN HIGHTEMPERATURE
SYSTEMS” by Natalia Sobczak, Jerzy Sobczak, Rajiv Asthana
- Contract is already signed with Springer. Publication is expected in 2016/2017.
3. Publication of the book “CAST METAL MATRIX COMPOSITES” by Jerzy Sobczak,
Rajiv Asthana, Natalia Sobczak
- Contract is already signed with Springer. Publication is expected in 2017/2018.
4. Organization of Technical Sessions for 73rd World Foundry Congress in 2018 in Poland.
